On Friday, February 5, 2016, 17 speakers and performers took the TEDx Coconut Grove stage and shared their “Dream” with an audience of about 1300 people.
The Combat Hippies were honored to be among them and performed an excerpt of the show, “Conscience Under Fire“. Following the impactful performance, organizers called upon the only man capable of capturing the crowd afterwards, Dre Baldwin. This pro-athlete, author, consultant, professional speaker, and empowerment expert, gave a powerful speech about confidence. After the event, The Combat Hippies caught up with him and gained insight as to how his message relates to veterans, and Post-Traumatic Growth.
“Confidence is a belief in yourself,or anything you are doing, that you can be successful. If someone believes they can get past what they’ve been through and get to the next stage in their life, thats the first step. If you don’t believe in yourself and try to do something, you will not get the right results”, said Dre.
With all the issues facing veterans today such as homelessness, unemployment, Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), and Military Sexual Trauma (MST), confidence is key in taking the first step towards healing. Dre offered an example of the difference between two people doing the same thing in which one was successful, and the other was not. The individual who achieved success believed and was confident in his actions while the other, thought the opposite and achieved negative results.
Confidence, however, is only one part of the process. Dre attributes his success to following the “Be, Do, Have” principal. In order to Have what you want, you must Be the right person, and Do the right things.
In addition to a strong belief of self, motivation, and following the principal, goal setting and taking action are key. According to Dre,
“Goals are the navigation system for the mind…imagine if you landed in a city you never been before, you get a rent a car that has navigation but you don’t put in the destination, what happens?…You use up all your time, use up all your gas, but get nowhere because you don’t know where you are going.”
A great strategy for setting goals involves:
- First creating your “big picture” of what you want to do with your life
- Then, break these down into the smaller targets
- Finally, once you have your plan, take action and start working towards these goals.
